Make Christmas more fun this year or keep your family tradition alive by cutting down your own Christmas tree. BUT! Do not forget to buy a permit first.  Here is some information regarding permits and locations in Colorado.

Buffalo Creek:

  • Wednesday, November 23, 2016 is the last day to purchase a permit
  • Permits only cost $10, but you must buy them in person
  • Permits can be bought at the South Platte Ranger District Office during operating hours, which are 8am- 4pm
  • You can obtain your own Christmas Tree on certain dates starting November 25th through December 8th

Leadville and Salida

  • Permits will be available starting November 21st through December 23rd
  • Permits cost $10 and a map of tree cutting area comes with it
  • Permits are available at Salida and Leadville Ranger District Offices

Fairplay

Permits available at

  • South Park Ranger District Office from November 25th to December 23rd
  • Lake George Fire Department on November 25-27 and December 2-3

Elk Creek Cutting Area and Fraser

  • The cutting area will be open from December 3rd through December 10th
  • Permits can be purchased for $10 seven days a week
  • Permits are available at:
    • Murdoch’s in Fraser
    • Winter Park Chamber of Commerce
    • Grand Lake of Commerce
    • Granby Ace Hardware

Sulphur Ranger District

  • Permits can be utilized from November 1st to January 6th
  • Permits are available at:
    • Murdoch’s in Fraser
    • Winter Park Chamber of Commerce
    • Grand Lake of Commerce
    • Granby Ace Hardware
    • Sulphur Ranger District Office

Red Feather Lakes

  • Area will be open from December 3rd– 11th from 8:30am-2:30pm
  • Permits are available at US Forest Service Fort Collins and Greeley Offices
  • Permits will be available on-site for cash only on weekends
  • Please call 970-295-6700 to make sure there is someone available who sells permits

Some Tips for You:

  • Don’t Forget to Bring an Ax- It is not provided for you and chainsaws are not allowed
  • Clothing- Dress weather appropriate because you will be outside
  • Sled- You may want to bring a sled in order to carry the tree or your children
  • Vehicle- Come with an appropriate vehicle that will allow you to transport your tree
