Lincoln has sold more vehicles in China than in the U.S. This is big news as Ford has just made this announcement in its sales figures for the Chinese market. Moreover, is the result of Lincoln’s unparalleled growth in China. This is compared to the falling sales in its home market.
Lincoln Cars – Almost a 50 Percent Increase in Sales
In 2021, more specifically, Lincoln has sold 91,000 cars in China. This number represents an impressive 48.3 percent increase over 2020. Also, on the other hand, the automaker has sold 86,929 units in the U.S. during the same period. It is an 18 percent decrease over 2020. Since 2013, 2021 was Lincoln’s worst year in the U.S.
Fastest-Growing Luxury Brands
In China, the situation is very different. Lincoln is “one of the fastest-growing luxury brands.” This is according to Ford. Also, a big chunk of Lincoln’s record sales numbers is due to the Corsair SUV. This SUV has sold more than 50,000 units in China. There is a 57 percent increase over 2020 which brings it to be among the top five best sellers of its segment in 2021. In addition, the Lincoln Zephry sedan that did debut last November at the Auto Guangzhou 2021, has already moved more than 2,300 pre-orders.
Ford’s president of Americas & International Markets Group, Kumar Galhotra, said that a big part of Lincoln’s appeal in China is because “it’s an iconic American brand.” He did admit that China is bringing massive scale, he did insist that the automaker will remain in North American markets. He said that “we have a very vibrant business in the U.S. and Canada and Mexico. Moreover, those markets are really important and are going to continue to be very important for us.”
Lincoln landed in China in 2014. Yet, despite the growth, it is still behind rival luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, and Volvo that is in terms of sales. It is while it is facing competition from the brand-new, established local marques.
In 2021, Ford China sales have exceeded 624,000 units. This is with a marginal 3.7 percent yearly increase. It has broken down this number Ford has sold 264,000 commercial vehicles (Ford and JMC), 237,000 passenger vehicles, plus 140,000 SUVs in China. It is showing a very different sales mix which is compared to the other markets.
